Plan a useful first client call

Learn what to ask about the goal, users, risks, budget, timing, and next step without sounding like a script.

Start with why now

Ask what made the work important today. The answer can reveal a launch, a broken process, a lost customer, or an internal deadline. That context matters more than a long feature list.

Opening question

What changed that made this project important now?

Find the useful finish line

Ask what should be different when the project is done. A clear result helps both sides avoid building the wrong thing.

  • Who will use the work?
  • Who approves it?
  • What must be true at the end?
  • What can wait until later?

Name risks without drama

Ask about time, old systems, missing content, decision makers, and other work that may block the project. Do not promise a date until you understand the risky parts.

Risk question

What part of this project feels most uncertain to your team?

Close with one next step

Repeat what you heard, name any open question, and agree on the next action. Send a short written note so nobody has to rely on memory.
