Why are my Upwork proposals not getting replies?

Diagnose proposals with no views, views without replies, and conversations without contracts. Choose a specific improvement before spending more Connects.

Start with the evidence you actually have

Upwork’s Stats and trends includes proposal and profile performance. Use the labels and date range shown in your account. Upwork’s stats guidance

Record job, submission date, proposal text, relevant sample, spend and the observed outcome. Keep cold applications, invitations and repeat-client conversations separate. Mark an unavailable view count unknown rather than zero. A platform interview count is not automatically a count of calls you attended.

If proposals are not being viewed

Review whether the jobs genuinely fit your work. Check mandatory skills, requested availability, scope and your closest proof. An application can be well written and still target a poor match.

Look at the client activity that is available, but do not infer a motive from silence. The client may not have reviewed applications or may have changed priorities. Compare similar jobs and allow time for later activity.

  • Check that the proposal was actually submitted.
  • Read the job’s mandatory requirements again.
  • Check whether the opening explains something specific about this job.
  • Record what is unknown before choosing a change.

If proposals are viewed but unanswered

Read the draft alongside the job. Can the client see relevant experience, the part you personally handled, and a useful next step? Check whether a required question, work sample or format was missed.

Price, scope, competition and the client’s decision can also matter. Views without replies do not prove that your rate is wrong. Test a clearer proof example before making an automatic discount.

Illustrative example — not a client result

Fictional job: a React dashboard has an unreadable mobile table. Weak opening: “I am an expert developer with excellent skills.” More useful opening: “Which three values must users compare on mobile? I would confirm those before changing the table layout.” Add a real matching sample only if you have one.

If conversations do not become contracts

Separate a written reply, a held call, a quote and an active contract. Review the unresolved decision: technical uncertainty, budget, timing, responsibilities or the buyer’s approval process.

After a conversation, recap the agreed goal and what remains unknown. Assign a next action and date only when agreed. Do not turn a polite response into a forecasted win.

Illustrative example — not a client result

“We agreed that the mobile layout needs fixing while the API stays unchanged. I still need the current screen and the columns that must remain visible. Once those are confirmed, I can scope the first milestone.” This is an illustrative recap, not a record of an actual meeting.

Know when to skip the next job

Write your reasons before spending Connects. Skip work that requires experience you cannot substantiate, availability you cannot provide or commitments you cannot assess.

A clear refusal protects the time available for better opportunities. Do not rewrite your experience to fit a mandatory requirement.

Illustrative example — not a client result

A post requires ten years of Liferay DXP delivery and an example of an existing deployment. A developer with only general React experience should not imply equivalent experience. Adjacent skills do not satisfy every requirement.

Run one useful comparison

Choose one change: tighter job selection, a more relevant sample or a clearer opening. Keep the other major inputs reasonably consistent and record the reason for the change.

For a small sample, describe the results without declaring a winning formula. Keep pending proposals open in your records. Track meaningful replies and contracts alongside views; a higher view rate alone may not create useful work.

Use the proposal checker for structural feedback, then have a person review the actual job, evidence and commitments. A checker cannot see the buyer’s reasoning.

Questions people ask

Clear answers before you act.

Should I boost every proposal?

Choose a spending limit and compare relevant outcomes before increasing paid visibility. Boosting cannot supply missing experience or establish why a previous client did not reply.

Can I follow up with a client who has not replied?

Use the communication options available in the actual Upwork thread. Do not seek private contact details to bypass an unopened conversation. Where a conversation exists, follow the agreed timing and add useful context.

What reply rate should I expect?

There is no defensible universal rate for your profile. Compare your own similar applications over a stated period and report the sample size and pending outcomes.
